All Gigs, Ever

No real reason other than to indulge my list-making fantasies, here are all the gigs I can remember going to. (Last updated 1 December 2005)

  1. Peter Gabriel

     26.6.1987
    London Earl's Court

  2. Genesis

     2.7.1987
    Wembley Stadium
    Support: Paul Young
I have never seen so many fights anywhere in my life as I did between 2pm and 7pm waiting for the acts to come on. And I was brought up in Romford.

  3. T'Pau

     1.4.1988
    Hammersmith Odeon
    Support: Bourgeois Tagg

  4. Steve Hackett

     7.5.1988
    London Sadler's Wells
    Support: Panic Brothers, Mae McKenna
What the hell were the Panic Brothers?

  5. Steve Hackett

     16.5.1988
    Dartford Orchard
    Support: Mae McKenna

  6. Siouxsie and the Banshees

     21.9.1988
    London Royal Albert Hall
    Support: Deutsch-Amerikanische Freundschaft
Without a shadow of a doubt, the worst gig I have ever been to. And as you can already see, I have seen T'Pau live.

  7. Marc Almond

     13.10.1988
    London Victoria Theatre

  8. Pink Floyd

     9.7.1989
    London London Arena

  9. Cure

     22.7.1989
    London Wembley Arena
    Support: Shellyan Orphan
Hottest day of the year and a gig that went on for hours and hours and hours. I swear they played every song twice, some three times.

  10. Kinks

     15.8.1989
Kentish Town Town & Country Club
    Support: River City People

  11. Who

     27.10.1989
    London Wembley Arena

  12. Ben Elton

     27.11.1989
    Hammersmith Odeon

  13. Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe

     29.10.1989
    London Wembley Arena
Briefly, the band formerly known as Yes.

  14. Jasper Carrott

     16.5.1990
    London Royal Albert Hall

  15. Marillion

     12.7.1990
    London Wembley Arena
    Support: Little Angels
Little did I know that in nine years time I would be seeing one of the Little Angels perform in the infintely better Younger Younger 28s.

  16. Marillion

     22.12.1990
Kentish Town Town & Country Club
    Support: Cry No More

  17. Carter USM

     9.3.1991
    Reading University
    Support: Genius Freak

  18. Newman & Baddiel

     29.6.1991

Support: Frank & Walters, Mega City 4, Midway Still

  21. They Might Be Giants

     4.2.1992
    London Bloomsbury Theatre
    Support: Family Go Town
During half of the TMBG set, between songs a lone voice could be heard clearly shouting among the cheers - "you wankers! you student wankers! fuck off!" etc. Turned out it was Jonathon Ross from the side of the stage. I think his celebrity star was on the wane at the time.

  22. Sugarcubes

     7.3.1992
    Brixton Academy
    Support: Levitation

  23. Thousand Yard Stare

     20.3.1992
    New Cross Venue
    Support: Jennifers, School of Fish
The Jennifers were an earlier incarnation of Supergrass. There were a lot of people making a fuss of them although I didn't really notice them that much!

  24. Carter USM

     1.5.1992
    Tonbridge Angel Centre
    Support: Frank & Walters

  25. They Might Be Giants

     13.5.1992
    London Town & Country Club
    Support: Cast
Yes, that Cast, over three years before the release of their debut album.

  26. Carter USM

     23.5.1992
    Brixton Academy
Support: Frank & Walters, Sultans of Ping FC
This is the daddy - the best gig of the whole lot.

  27. Sultans of Ping FC

     6.6.1992
    Canterbury Kent Uni (Rutherford JCR)
    Support: Nineteen Miles High
I'd forgotten that I'd been to this one until I found the poster I nicked off the walls. It was A3, badly xeroxed and put together Viz style by a bunch of students.

     3.7.1992
    Charing Cross Marquee

  29. A House

     14.8.1992
    Charing Cross Marquee
    Support: Strangelove

  30. Kitchens of Distinction

     12.9.1992
    Clapham Grand

Although being a fan of both bands at the time, I remember leaving early because I felt sick :-(

  31. Marc Almond

     30.9.1992
    London Royal Albert Hall

  32. Sultans of Ping FC

     8.10.1992
    Rayleigh Pink Toothbrush
    Support: Radiohead, The Shopkeeper Appeared
The Pink Toothbrush is quite a small venue and I managed to bump into or obstruct Thom Yorke several times while he was helping to wire up all the guitars just before Radiohead came on. Deliberately, on some occasions …

  33. Frank & Waters

     9.10.1992
    London Astoria

  34. Pop Will Eat Itself

     10.10.1992

    Charing Cross Heaven
    Support: Collapsed Lung

  49. Jack Dee

     7.10.1993
    Dartford Orchard
The most unfunny twat I have had the displeasure to see live. Bored the arse off me and much of the audience. Even Jim Davidson could have done better.

  50. Carter USM

     21.10.1993
    Tonbridge Angel Centre
    Support: Sultans of Ping FC
Played in a big school gym type room.

    Support: Blaggers ITA

  54. Sultans of Ping FC

     20.5.1994

Warm Friday evening, 45 minute set or thereabouts which was a bit of a shame.

     26.5.1994
    Shepherds Bush Empire

  56. A House

     10.6.1994
    Highbury Garage

  57. Carter USM

     8.7.1994
    Clapham Grand
    Support: S*M*A*S*H, Salad, Blaggers ITA
I don't remember S*M*A*S*H playing and I think I was too late for most of Blaggers ITA, I wonder if I was actually there sometimes. Salad were excellent though, truly one of the underrated bands from the Britpop era.

  58. Blur

     4.10.1994
    Cambridge Corn Exchange
This was the one where I had to pay 70 quid for 2 tickets from a tout.

It took me a long time to remember who played there that day …

     23.8.1995
    Highbury Garage

  67. Blur

     17.9.1995
    Clacton Oscar's
I think this was the first gig I went to which was advertised on usenet (alt.music.blur), it sold out within hours. Oscar's is a small nightclub and we were all packed in around 10 to a square foot. In those days, Dave Rowntree (Blur's drummer) used to write and post up the Blur FAQ himself!

    Colchester Essex University

    Brighton Stanmer Park
Bands seen: Echobelly, Audioweb, Menswear, My Life Story, David Devant and his Sprit Wife, Bis, Add N to X
I interviewed Jake Shillingford from My Life Story for now-defunct Billericay radio station Mayflower FM. I had met Jake in the audience at the Divine Comedy gig the previous week - he gave me his contact number by writing it on my ticket in lipstick!

    Charing Cross Albery Theatre

  88. Abdoujaparov

     30.1.1999
    Chelmsford Y Club
    Support: Pharmacy, Ton Up Kid
Abdoujaparov is the band that Les Carter formed after Carter USM split in 1997. This was their second gig and I interviewed them for Phoenix FM. (A copy of the interview can be found here. Les Carter mentions it in his tour diary here). Pharmacy featured Morty on drums - he was formerly with the Sultans of Ping FC.

Support: Jim's Super Stereoworld, Abdoujaparov, Iinviisiibles

  110. Gorillaz

     28.9.2001
    London Forum
This was weird, they just played behind a big screen. All you could see was their silhouettes and some superimposed animations. Quite freaky without the benefit of alcohol.

Bands seen: Bluetones, Elvis Costello, Supergrass, Nickelback, Athlete, My Vitriol, Manic Street Preachers, Turin Brakes, Seafood, Donnas, Coral, Elbow, Idlewild, Doves, Royksopp, Lamb, Soft Cell
Bit of a weak line up this year I thought - Royksopp and the Manics being the best of best ones.

I like this! Done the same thing myself, you can remember more than me, and it sounds like you mostly had better taste in gigs...

That's a great idea. I think I'll try and drag out all my old tickets from gigs from over the years and start the same thing over Christmas. I won't have much of a memory of most of them but might as well make a start!

Well that answered my 'was Paul at Noisy Night 1?' question.

I'm impressed and slightly scared that you have all the dates written down.

Hi. I found you through a great Youtube video you uploaded. Great list of gigs here. I was at the same MLS and Kenickie gigs as you, although Earl Brutus did my head in as support act. I went to three of the Dingwalls MLS gigs. I posted a list of 100+ bands I've seen live here.
