Having been lucky enough to see Coldplay at a couple of small venues (the Junction in Cambridge in 2000 particularly stands out in the mind), I just can't get the big-crowd-in-the-dark thing. I also bought Brothers And Sisters on Fierce Panda (which I lost when I moved house) and remember listening to it thinking this is the kind of atmospheric, thought provoking and all-round fantastic no-sales indie that I love. Funny how things turn out, isn't it.
Okay, I suppose my bandwidth is now going to get a teensy weensy bit hammered, but it is the end of the month, and I have a few gigs left - so hammer away before it's all too late.

Definitely my favourite band of the moment. I should have heard it all before but there's something of particular quality in all of the songs on Silent Alarm, which is my bestest album of 2005. I thought the live songs were a bit wayward, but that was probably because the production went through the mixing desk and it doesn't quite capture the same atmosphere and energy that comes when you hear it out of the big speakers.
I got a bit distracted while looking for something
And ended up on the English translation of the German Wikipedia for Sporting World Records set in 1953. Enjoy.

.. does sound exactly like the Kaiser Chiefs' Employment, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. This is not a cheap shot, this is exactly why I love the Kaiser Chiefs - they play a brand of music I adore without having the stigma of enjoying something that Damon Albarn had something to do with. I actually have a reason to look forward to going to V this year. I feel duty bound to both go and enjoy it, since it is only a short drive up the A176 for me, and hopefully I won't be elbowed and kicked to the floor by a load of 15 year old girls as I was during Scissor Sisters last year.
For some reason I can't admit that I like the Doves. I've never considered them a "favourite" of mine but I'm more than happy to sit and watch them from start to finish. Twice I've heard a single, thought it was fantastic, bought the album and never played it. It's like I can take 5 minutes of them but not 45 which is probably so far from the truth I should prove myself wrong one day, but maybe not today. Of the two tracks on here, Space Face is actually a reworking of a very very early Sub Sub track - I think the opening keyboards instantly date the song around 1992, which is helpful.
How fantastic is this idea? This press release stood out among all the others today:
Do you ever lay in bed at night dreaming of what Sheriff Fatman would sound like played on descant recorders, xylophones and glockenspiels? This Christmas you can find out JIM BOB'S CHRISTMAS CONCERT WEDNESDAY 7th DECEMBER CARLING ACADEMY ISLINGTON N1 Centre, 16 Parkfield St, London N1 Tickets: 0870 771 2000 (24 hrs) www.ticketweb.co.uk Featuring The Jim Bob School Orchestra Performing Jim Bob songs, Carter USM songs and new numbers from the Jim Bob School Orchestra concept album. The Frank and Walters - from the Wilderness to the Water Rats
Had the good fortune to see long forgotten Irish veterans The Frank and Walters at the Water Rats on Saturday. I've long admired the band's simple yet highly efficient indie-ness and their ability to lose their fanbase as their songs stayed at the high standard of their early releases - the interestingly titled EP1, EP2 and EP3 were all NME Singles of the Week in 1992, when the accolade really meant something.
There is an interview with the band here and it seems there is a B-sides album and an album of new material coming out soon. Have to agree that the new songs were just as good as the old, a rarity these days.
The track I have added is an acoustic session from their last LP, 2000's Glass.
One of the things I love about this band is that Pete Doherty is obviously unfocused and casual about the whole thing - none of this Primal Scream-style starting songs again, if they sound bad, he's not muso enough to care. I still haven't got round to seeing him live - missed a couple of old Libertines gigs at the last minute but I'll be at the Wireless on Thursday so I might finally get within a quarter of a mile of him.
I saw Royksopp in the dance tent at V a couple of years ago and they really beat the hell out of their keyboards, Jesus Jones style (remember that?) Their performance at Glastonbury was a bit more sedate and they were promoting a lot of new songs (with words included this time) from their forthcoming album, The Understanding. I have added Eple (sounds like apple, because it is Norwegian for apple!) because it's almost perfect pop music.
No real reason other than to indulge my list-making fantasies, here are all the gigs I can remember going to. (Last updated 1 December 2005)
Peter Gabriel

4.2.1992 London Bloomsbury Theatre Support: Family Go Town During half of the TMBG set, between songs a lone voice could be heard clearly shouting among the cheers - "you wankers! you student wankers! fuck off!" etc. Turned out it was Jonathon Ross from the side of the stage. I think his celebrity star was on the wane at the time.
Sugarcubes
7.3.1992 Brixton Academy Support: Levitation
Thousand Yard Stare
20.3.1992 New Cross Venue Support: Jennifers, School of Fish The Jennifers were an earlier incarnation of Supergrass. There were a lot of people making a fuss of them although I didn't really notice them that much!

Sultans of Ping FC
6.6.1992 Canterbury Kent Uni (Rutherford JCR) Support: Nineteen Miles High I'd forgotten that I'd been to this one until I found the poster I nicked off the walls. It was A3, badly xeroxed and put together Viz style by a bunch of students.

Marc Almond
30.9.1992 London Royal Albert Hall

8.10.1992 Rayleigh Pink Toothbrush Support: Radiohead, The Shopkeeper Appeared The Pink Toothbrush is quite a small venue and I managed to bump into or obstruct Thom Yorke several times while he was helping to wire up all the guitars just before Radiohead came on. Deliberately, on some occasions …
7.10.1993 Dartford Orchard The most unfunny twat I have had the displeasure to see live. Bored the arse off me and much of the audience. Even Jim Davidson could have done better.
